School Calendar Update

School Calendar Update
Posted on 09/10/2020

Dear MPSD Families,

We hope the beginning of this new and unusual school year is off to a great start for your children. Our teachers, administrators and support staff have been excited to reconnect with students both virtually and in our buildings over the past two weeks.

To accommodate the teacher professional development and collaboration needed to provide both full distance and blended learning models, our Board of Education on Sept. 8 approved changes to our 2020-2021 school calendar.

There will be no school for students (no in-person or distance instruction by teachers) on these three days which will be teacher development days to collaborate, prepare virtual and blended learning lessons, and make any adjustments for students:
September 24, 2020 - Thursday
November 18, 2020 - Wednesday
December 15, 2020 - Tuesday

The professional development days rotate days of the week so the middle school cohorts will each miss only one day of instruction.

Coronavirus will also require changes this year to our traditional parent-teacher conferences. We do want to connect with parents about their child's learning progress; however, we know that we will not hold face-to-face conferences. School leaders are developing alternative plans that could include virtual conferences. The Board approved changing these half days of school back to full days for middle school and high school students and staff:
October 14, 2002 - Wednesday (LHS Parent Conference Day)

October 22, 2020 - Thursday (MS parent conference day)

We are exploring the possibility of eliminating weather-related closures this school year and are seeking more input from district-wide staff.  The idea would be that on days with weather-related emergencies, we would not close school and instead announce in advance that the day would be 100% virtual learning. If this idea was implemented we could eliminate weather make-up days at the end of the year.

But let’s not talk about snow or ice yet! Enjoy your fall season and let’s focus on helping all students learn and excel! Have a wonderful weekend.
